Amarillo Spider Infestation — Identifying the Risk Level
The majority of spiders found in US homes are harmless. However, Black Widow and Brown Recluse spiders — both present across much of the US — deliver medically significant bites. Properties with high spider populations also indicate an underlying insect population sustaining them.
In Amarillo, the highest spider activity consistently occurs in areas with low disturbance and available prey: garages, basements, crawlspaces, seldom-accessed storage, and exterior foundation zones with leaf litter or dense vegetation.
Recognising Black Widow and Brown Recluse Spiders
Black Widow: shiny black body, red hourglass on underside of abdomen. Found in dark, undisturbed areas. Brown Recluse: light to medium brown, violin-shaped marking on cephalothorax. Found in boxes, closets, and basements. Do not attempt to handle either species without professional assistance.
